A GUNMAN OPENED FIRE IN A SUBURBAN PORTLAND SHOPPIND MALL, KILLING TWO PEOPLE AND OTHERS WOUNDEN: A gunman opened fire in a suburban Portland shopping mall Tuesday, killing two people and wounding another as people were doing their Christmas shopping , authorities said. Witnesses described a scene of chaos and disbelief as a gunman wearing some sort of camouflage outfit and a white mask shot an initial burst of fire and then more rounds at Clackamas Town Center. Shoppers tried to find safe areas as teams of police officers began entering the mall to find the shooter. Clackamas County sheriff's Lt. James Rhodes said later that the gunman was dead, but he wouldn't say how he died or provide any details about him. Authorities were going store-to-store to secure the scene and to escort hiding shoppers outside, but Rhodes said there was no indication that there wasmore than one shooter. Austin Patty, 20, who works at Macy 's, said he saw a man in a white mask carrying a rifle and wearing a bulletproof vest. He heard the gunman say "I am the shooter," as if announcing himself, Patty said. He then fired several shots paced seconds apart. A series of rapid-fire shots in short succession followed. Patty said he ducked to the ground, then ran. His Macy's co-worker, Pam Moore, told The Associated Press the gunman was short, with darkhair, dressed in camouflage. He had body armor and a rifle. "I heard about 20 shots and everyone hit the ground," Moore said. "That's when we all just ran." Shaun Wik, 20, from Fairview, said he was Christmas shopping with his girlfriend and opened a fortune cookie at the food court. Inside was written "live for today, remember yesterday, think of tomorrow." As he read it, he heard three shots. He heard a man he believes was the gunman shout,"Get down!" but Wik and his girlfriend ran. He heard seven or eight more shots. He didn't turn around. "If I had looked back, I might not be standing here," Wik said. "I might have been one of the ones who got hit." Kira Rowland told KGW-TV that she was shopping at Macy's withher infant son when the shots started. "All of a sudden you hear two shots, which sounded like balloons popping," Rowland told the station. "Everybody got on the ground. I grabbed the baby from the stroller and got on the ground." Rowland said she heard people screaming and crying. "I put the baby back in the stroller and ran like hell," Rowland said. "It was awful. It was shots after shots after shots like a massacre. "It was just awful." Holli Bautista, 28, said she was shopping in the Macy's for a Christmas dress for her daughter when she heard a two or three pops that sounded like firecrackers. "I heard people running and screaming and saying 'Get out, there's somebody shooting,'" shetold the AP. "It was a scene of chaos." She said hundreds of shoppers and mall employees started running, and she and dozens of other people were trying to escape through an exit in the department store. Bautista said the Macy's opens into the food court area, where it was reported the shootings tookplace. Bautista said it sounded like the shots were coming from that direction. Tiffany Turgetto and her husband of Gladstone had exitedMacy's through the first floor when they heard the gunshots coming from the second floor of the mall. "People in front of us people were dropping, finding covering," she told the AP."People were yelling screaming and gasping, yelling to get out. The lady next to us, she threw a chair and started running. We couldn't run because the chair was there." Turgetto and her husband and other people were able to quickly leave through a Barnes & Noble bookstore before the police arrived and locked down the mall. "I had left my phone at home. 15 KILLED IN SHOOT-OUT WITH BOKO-HARAM SECT: MAIDUGURI, Nigeria. A shootout in northeastern Nigeriabetween security forces and members of a radical Islamist sect killed at least 15 people, including a local police chief, authorities said Tuesday. The shootings took place in the city of Potiskum, which has increasingly become the scene ofviolent attacks by the sect knownas Boko Haram. Army spokesmanLt. Eli Lazarus said the attack began late Sunday night in the city and went on for hours after suspected sect members bombed a local police station andattacked a bank branch. Lazarus said the dead included a police chief and 14 suspected Boko Haram members. Civilians have been killed in such shoot-outs before and Nigeria’s militaryroutinely downplays such casualties. The identity of those who died could not be independently verified Tuesday, though Lazarus said those killed had been carrying weapons and ammunition. However, Lazarus said authorities only collected four corpses of the suspected sect fighters, as the other 10 ‘‘were dragged away by other Boko Haram members in order tohide their identity.’’ It was unclear the motivation behind the attack, though analysts and local security officials believe Boko Haram has funded some of its attacks through bank robberies in whichsect members blow open bank buildings to steal the money inside. Boko Haram, whose name means‘‘Western education is sacrilege’’ in the Hausa language of Nigeria’s Muslim north, is wagingan increasingly bloody campaign of guerrilla attacks against the nation’s weak central government. The sect says it wants Nigeria to enact strict Shariah law and release its imprisoned members. Despite a heavy military and police presence, the sect has been able to launch frequent attacks. More than 770 people have been killed in Boko Haram attacks so far this year, according to an Associated Press count, making 2012 the worst year of violence attributed to the group. Boko Haram also has loose connections with al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb and Somalia’s al-Shabab, according to Western military officials and diplomats.

LAGOS CHIEF JUDGE FREES 46 PRISONERS FROM IKOYI PRISON: The Chief Judge of Lagos State, Justice Ayotunde Phillips, yesterday Tuesday December 11th released 46 prisoners, including 75-year-old man, from the Ikoyi Prisons in Lagos during her visit to the prison. TEENAGE GIRL GOT PREGNANT FOR FIVE BOYS IT was a shocking story to the parents and neighbours of a teenage girl and pupil of Ikorenim Primary School in Calabar, Cross River State, Ekamen Asuquo, when a pregnancy test that was conducted on her at the General Hospital, Calabar revealed that she was carrying a four-month pregnancy. The mother of the primary five pupil, who resides at 2, Pipeline Road, Ikorenim had suspected pregnancy, going by the symptoms exhibited by the teenage girl, who was sick for a while as she decided to take her to the hospital after she failed to get well, despite long period of self medication. The mother was rattled when it was discovered that the girl was pregnant after some tests. A neighbour, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said “She has been at home for the past two months always complaining of one ailment or the other and the mother had to take her to the General Hospital after home medication could not heal her in the hope that she could be treated there.” The neighbour, said when the teenage girl was confronted by her mother, who allegedly sells hot drinks and illicit drugs over who was responsible for the pregnancy, she mentioned one Tony, one of the boys that patronises her mother’s hot drinking joint. However, the source hinted that when Tony was confronted, he said “He was the one who dated the teenage girl first but another customer, Jones snatched her from him and when Jones was confronted, he said he had since stopped dating the girl and mentioned another person, who when also confronted, mentioned another boy and at the last count, the number was five.” It was gathered that the mother was infuriated when her daughter confirmed that she slept with all the boys mentioned and could not actually tell who was responsible.
